Waterski Jumping is performed on two very long skis similar to those a beginner uses, with a specialised tail fin that is somewhat shorter and much wider (so it will support the weight of the skier when he is on the jump ramp).
The skier is towed behind a ski boat, which is set at a fixed speed through the jump course, the skier then manoevers himself by crossing the wake and creating tension on the rope to acheive the maximum speed when hitting a ramp, (which floats in the water) launching themselves into the air with the goal of travelling as far as possible before landing on he water. The skier must however successfully land and retain control of the ski rope to be awarded the distance.
Professional ski jumpers can travel up to 70mph at distances of in excess of 200ft. Check out our London Night Jump event in August to get a taste for this extreme sport. visit www.londonnightjump.co.uk
